Marriage certificate attestation for the UAE
Short answer
For a foreign resident sponsoring family, ICP's residency list asks for "proof of kinship (attested marriage contract, children's birth certificates)". A foreign marriage certificate needs the home country's pre-authentication and foreign ministry attestation, then UAE embassy and UAE MoFA attestation. UAE MoFA charges AED 150. An apostille alone is not accepted, and the original certificate is required.
- What ICP asks for
- An attested marriage contract as proof of kinship
- UAE MoFA fee
- AED 150 per marriage contract
- Original or copy
- Original only — personal certificates must be submitted in original form
- Apostille on its own
- Not accepted — the UAE is not a Hague member
- UAE embassy and UAE MoFA
- Up to 15 business days via a UAE mission (MoFA)

Almost everyone reading this is trying to get a husband or wife onto a UAE residence visa, and the marriage certificate is the document that decides whether that file moves. For a foreign resident sponsoring family, ICP’s residency list asks for “proof of kinship (attested marriage contract, children’s birth certificates)”. For family of a UAE or GCC national, ICP’s list reads “attested marriage contract or marriage continuity certificate when sponsoring spouse”.
That single line is why you are here, and it sets the standard. A photocopy will not do, an unregistered ceremony certificate will not do, and an apostille will not do. What is needed is the registered marriage record, carried through the full legalisation chain in the country where you married, finishing with UAE MoFA inside the UAE at a fee of AED 150.
Marriage certificate attestation price and route
Start with the original registered marriage record—not only a ceremony keepsake certificate. Complete the authentication and foreign-ministry stages in the country where the marriage was registered, followed by the UAE mission and UAE MoFA stages. UAE MoFA charges AED 150 per marriage contract, plus AED 3 and 2% per transaction. Home-country, mission, courier and translation charges are separate.
Dubai uses the same federal online service and tariff as the rest of the UAE. MoFA’s attestation FAQ says its Customer Happiness Centres are closed. Apply through the official website or UAE MOFA app and follow the assigned digital or courier route. Call 80044444 for service guidance.
When an attested marriage certificate is required
ICP names the attested marriage contract in its residency-permit list. For a foreign resident sponsoring family, the wording is “proof of kinship (attested marriage contract, children’s birth certificates)”; for family of a UAE or GCC national, it is “attested marriage contract or marriage continuity certificate when sponsoring spouse”. ICP’s entry-permit list for visiting relatives asks for “proof of kinship”; check whether the attested marriage contract is required for your visit application. Nothing in ICP’s employment entry permit list mentions a marriage certificate at all — the only attested document named there is a certificate of good conduct.
Sponsorship also has conditions separate from attestation. ICP’s residency page lists a minimum salary of AED 3,000 plus employer-provided housing, or AED 4,000 if housing is not provided; the family members a resident may sponsor are a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 years old and children with special needs; and holders of the Green Residence may sponsor first-degree relatives.
You need the marriage certificate attested if…
- You are sponsoring your husband or wife for a UAE residence visa — ICP names the attested marriage contract explicitly
- You are bringing a spouse in on a visit visa for relatives, where ICP asks for proof of kinship
- The certificate was issued outside the UAE, in any country, in any language
- A UAE court, bank, land department or government body has asked for the marriage certificate specifically
- You are moving the family on an existing sponsorship and the file is being rebuilt from scratch
You do not need it if…
- Both of you hold your own employment visas and neither is sponsoring the other
- You are coming on a visit, tourist or student visa yourself — ICP lists no attested document for those
- You are sponsoring children only — ask the typing centre whether the marriage contract is needed as proof of kinship before paying for it
- The certificate was issued in the UAE and will only be used inside the UAE — this chain is for certificates issued abroad
- It was attested once already for an earlier UAE application. Attested documents do not expire
Why an apostille does not finish the UAE route
The UAE is not a contracting party to the Hague Apostille Convention. It does not appear anywhere on the HCCH status table, and India’s own Ministry of External Affairs lists the UAE at entry 45 on its register of countries that are not members. So a marriage certificate destined for the UAE needs full consular legalisation: pre-authentication in the country of marriage, that country’s foreign ministry, the UAE mission covering that country, then UAE MoFA.
In apostille countries, the apostille is frequently the correct home-country output that the UAE embassy then stamps on top of. The UAE Embassy in London expressly requires FCDO legalisation — an apostille — before it will act. In India and Pakistan the reverse is true: their foreign ministries must issue an ordinary attestation, because their apostille service is for Hague destinations only. An apostille is insufficient for the UAE, not invalid.
UAE MoFA attestation confirms signatures and seals. It does not decide whether the marriage is valid or currently subsisting.
One application, two attestations
Older guidance often says you must finish the embassy stage abroad and then start a separate UAE MoFA application in the UAE. On the combined routes that is no longer the case. Under UAE MoFA’s Digital Attestation service, one application now covers both. The mission pages put it verbatim: “One service, two attestations: One application covers both the UAE Embassy in New Delhi and the UAE MoFA in the UAE.”
For a marriage certificate that means the two UAE-side stages collapse into a single submission and a single payment, with MoFA’s stated time of up to 15 business days via missions. As at 27 September 2026, MoFA mission pages publish this combined service for New Delhi (which also handles Bhutan-issued documents), Mumbai, Islamabad, London (which also handles Iceland-issued documents), Dhaka, Canberra, Colombo, Kathmandu, Pretoria and Beirut, among others. We found no current MoFA page for Karachi or Cairo; confirm with the mission. The home-country foreign ministry stage is still required and is not part of the combined service, and the original physical certificate is still required — a courier collects it. We found no current mission attestation page on mofa.gov.ae for the UAE Embassy Manila as of 27 September 2026, so confirm with the embassy whether the UAE MoFA stage is separate for a Philippine marriage certificate.
You can do this yourself, and often should
MoFA’s FAQ says anyone can submit the application on the document owner’s behalf, so your spouse, a relative or a colleague in the UAE can submit for you. The only standard channels are the UAE MoFA website, the UAE MOFA app and UAE missions for relevant overseas stages. MoFA’s attestation FAQ says its Customer Happiness Centres are closed. Apply through the official website or UAE MOFA app and follow the assigned digital or courier route. Call 80044444 for service guidance. For a single English-language marriage certificate with clean paperwork, the government fee of AED 150 plus AED 3 and 2 per cent is genuinely the whole UAE-side bill.
How the route differs by the country you married in
The UAE half of the chain is nearly identical everywhere. The country of marriage decides your cost, your timeline and most of your rejection risk.
| Country of marriage | Before the foreign ministry | Foreign ministry stage | UAE stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | State Home Department for marriage certificates and affidavits, or the SDM route the MEA authorises for non-commercial documents | MEA — free. It accepts no documents directly from the public; four outsourced agencies charge Rs 84 per document plus Rs 3 per page scanning | New Delhi or Mumbai, combined with UAE MoFA. Time not published |
| Pakistan | None for NADRA-issued documents: MoFA Pakistan states they are attested directly. The Nikah Nama must be signed and stamped by the Nikah Registrar, with the Marriage Registration Certificate and the bride’s CNIC showing the husband’s name, or a NADRA FRC/CRC. AJK Nikah Namas also need Tehsil Mufti attestation (MoFA Pakistan, checked 23 Aug 2026) | MoFA Pakistan — free, prescribed revenue stamps only. General documents processed within two hours (checked 23 Aug 2026) | Islamabad, combined with UAE MoFA. Time not published |
| Philippines | PSA copy of the marriage certificate, ordered through the PSA helpline apostille service. For newly registered marriages the local civil registrar copy must be certified by PSA; LCR Form 1A, 2A or 3A is required where entries are unclear | DFA — appointment only. PHP 200 Certificate of Authentication is the output for non-Hague destinations such as the UAE; regular authentication is PHP 100, released after 5 working days (checked 23 Aug 2026) | Embassy Manila. No current mission attestation page on mofa.gov.ae (checked 27 Sep 2026); confirm fee and route with the embassy |
| United Kingdom | None. A GRO marriage certificate is a public registry document the FCDO accepts directly, with no solicitor or notary step | FCDO — £45 standard, usually up to 25 working days. GRO marriage certificates cannot get an e-Apostille, so the paper service (£45, usually up to 25 working days) applies | Embassy London, combined with UAE MoFA. Time not published for the digital route; up to 5 working days by post. London accepts documents by post only, never in person |
| Egypt | Civil Status endorsement, at Abbasiya, Giza, the City Stars model centre, the Tagamoa registry or an MFA-accredited governorate registry | Egyptian MFA — EGP 115 per document, ordinary rate. If a translation is used, Egypt’s MFA lists Civil Status as the body that endorses translations of civil-status certificates | Embassy Cairo. No current mission attestation page (checked 27 Sep 2026); confirm with the mission |
If you married in a third country
Couples who married somewhere neither of them is from — a Filipino and an Indian who married in Sri Lanka, a British couple who married in Thailand — get caught by a rule that is easy to miss. The certificate must be attested by the UAE mission covering the country that issued it. The UAE Embassy in New Delhi states that documents not issued in India must be attested by the UAE mission in their country of issuance. Your nationality and your current residence are irrelevant; the place of issue decides everything, including whether the “one service, two attestations” route is even available to you.
Where Arabic translation sits
UAE MoFA’s requirement is an “original document in English or Arabic (or an official translation of it)”. A marriage certificate already in English therefore needs no translation to pass through the chain, and paying for one up front is a common waste.
Translation becomes necessary at the point of use rather than the point of attestation — UAE courts, notaries public, land departments, banks and many government submissions. Only translators registered with the UAE Ministry of Justice are used for that work; the Ministry runs the registration regime as a formal service, at AED 3,000 and a 65-day service duration. That AED 3,000 is what the translator pays to register, not what you pay for a translation.
The sequence matters more than the price. Attest first, translate afterwards, inside the UAE. If you translate before the chain, none of the stamps added later appear in the translation and the job has to be redone.
Egypt is the one genuine exception. The Egyptian MFA attests the translation itself, in-country, produced by an approved body such as the Ministry of Justice, the Armed Forces Language Institute, Civil Status or a government university, with a fee charged on the original and on the translation. If a translation is used, Egypt’s MFA lists Civil Status as the body that endorses translations of civil-status certificates; the receiving UAE body decides whether it wants one.
Why marriage certificate attestations get rejected
A rejected UAE MoFA application cannot be amended or reopened. You file a new one, and the attestation fee is refunded automatically within 14 working days while delivery fees are not refunded at all. MoFA’s service page now says refund eligibility follows its refund procedures. On a visa deadline that is the expensive part, not the AED 150.
Why these applications get rejected
- A religious ceremony certificate with no registration Register the marriage with the authority in the country where it took place and attest that registered record. An unregistered ceremony certificate cannot start the chain because no government authority will pre-authenticate it.
- The registrar's signature or stamp is missing Take the certificate back to the issuing registrar before you start. Every stage after that authenticates a signature, so if the first signature is absent there is nothing to authenticate.
- A certified copy submitted instead of the original Use the original. The UAE mission pages we checked state that official personal documents such as birth, marriage and death certificates must be submitted in their original form, even though true copies are accepted for other document classes.
- The name or its spelling differs from the passport Have the registrar correct or re-issue the certificate first. UAE MoFA lists 'information does not match the document' as a rejection reason, and the mismatch repeats at every stage of the chain.
- The certificate is laminated Have the lamination removed before submitting. 'Document must not be laminated' is one of UAE MoFA's three stated requirements, and the UAE mission pages we checked (New Delhi, Mumbai, Islamabad, London) repeat it.
- Sent to the wrong UAE mission Send it to the mission covering the country that issued the certificate, not where you live. New Delhi states that non-Indian documents must go to their country of issuance.
- Wrong document type or issuing authority selected on the portal UAE MoFA names this as a rejection reason. Select the marriage contract line and the authority exactly as printed on the certificate, not the closest-looking option.
- Documents apostilled or attested as a bundle The UAE mission pages we checked (New Delhi, Mumbai, Islamabad, London) state that documents apostilled in a bundle are not accepted. Have each certificate apostilled or attested individually at home; on the MoFA portal they can share one application (up to five documents on the same route).
- A document eligible for digital attestation submitted through the courier pathway The UAE MoFA website decides which pathway applies. Do not override it — submitting on the wrong pathway is an explicit rejection reason.
Before you start the chain
- Confirm you hold the registered marriage record, not only a ceremony certificate
- Check both names against both passports, character for character
- Order the children's birth certificates at the same time — they travel the same route and are needed for the same visa file
- Confirm which UAE mission covers the country of marriage before paying anything
- Leave the Arabic translation until after the last stamp is on
Two points people often miss
An attested marriage certificate does not expire. UAE MoFA states that there is no expiry date to an attested document. The receiving authority can still ask for newer proof that the marriage continues, which is a different document.
Budget for the visa, not only the stamps. ICP publishes its own fees for issuing a residency permit: AED 100 to apply, AED 100 for the annual residence permit, AED 100 smart service fee, AED 500 if the status is being adjusted inside the country, and AED 50 a day for overstay. Service completion is stated as two days. Those are separate from anything on this page, and they are the reason an attestation quote that sounds like the whole cost of a family visa never is.
The process, step by step
Get hold of the right certificate
Use the registered record that the issuing country's authorities will attest — usually the civil registry certificate; in some countries (e.g. Pakistan) the registered Nikah Nama with its registration certificate. A ceremony keepsake certificate that was never registered cannot be attested. Check the registrar has signed and stamped it, that it is an original rather than a certified copy, and that the spelling of both names matches both passports.
Pre-authenticate in the country of marriage
The body differs by country: the State Home Department or the SDM route in India, none at all for a NADRA-issued Pakistani certificate, a PSA copy in the Philippines, none for a GRO certificate in the UK, and Civil Status in Egypt.
Attestation by that country's foreign ministry
UAE MoFA requires that original documents are attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country before any UAE stage. India's MEA and MoFA Pakistan both charge nothing for this; the UK FCDO charges £45 on the standard service and Egypt's MFA charges EGP 115.
UAE embassy or consulate in the country of marriage
Applied for through the UAE MoFA website with UAE PASS, selecting the country of issuance. The original physical certificate is still required and a courier collects it.
UAE MoFA attestation inside the UAE
The final stamp, and the one the visa file needs. Where the mission runs the combined service, this is covered by the same application as the embassy stage.
Only if asked: Arabic legal translation
UAE MoFA accepts English or Arabic, so the chain itself rarely needs a translation. Translation becomes necessary at the point of use, after attestation, and must be done inside the UAE by a Ministry of Justice-registered legal translator.
