South Africa has a document-specific fork

The DIRCO stage applies across the published civil and education routes, but a degree has an extra SAQA step. Do not copy the birth-certificate sequence onto a university qualification or assume that DIRCO alone replaces the certification the embassy names.

After DIRCO, every document goes into the same UAE application described below.

Build the submission around the DIRCO certificate

The UAE mission repeatedly names the Certificate of Authentication from DIRCO, not merely a stamp that looks official. Keep that certificate attached to the underlying record and include the embassy payment proof. If a courier is used, give it a copy of the payment proof as the embassy instructs.

DIRCO’s legalisation service is free of charge. Since 1 September 2026 it no longer accepts walk-ins; book a slot at dirco.gov.za/legalisation-bookings. At a booking, 5 documents or fewer are processed the same day, 5–10 in 24 hours and 11 or more in 2 working days. Courier submissions take 3–4 weeks.

One application for the embassy and MoFA

The UAE Embassy in South Africa runs UAE MoFA’s Digital Attestation. Its page states that one application covers both the UAE Embassy in South Africa and the UAE MoFA in the UAE. Apply on mofa.gov.ae with a UAE Pass account and select Republic of South Africa as the country of issuance. A MoFA-approved service provider then contacts you to collect the original, within 24 hours of submission, and returns it 24–48 hours after release (48–72 hours in remote areas).

No processing time is published; MoFA’s service page gives up to 15 business days for documents submitted through a mission abroad. The same page also covers documents from Botswana, Lesotho and Namibia.

The embassy’s older FAQ, still live on its contact page, describes paying by card at the embassy and says no appointment is needed. Confirm with the embassy (Pretoriaemb.visa@mofa.gov.ae, +27 12 342 7736) which route it wants for your document before you send an original.

Why a South African document is refused

The Pretoria page lists these rules:

• The original physical document is required.
• Documents apostilled in a bundle are not accepted; submit each document separately.
• Laminated documents cannot be attested.
• A power of attorney must be signed before a notary or legal authority in South Africa, and a power of attorney with commercial content is treated as a commercial document.
• A memorandum and articles of association must be attested separately.
• Civil documents cannot be attested without the DIRCO Certificate of Authentication.

Commercial sets need a document count before a price

The published AED 2,000 figure is per commercial document. A board resolution and a certificate of incorporation are separate documents, and the embassy states that a memorandum and articles of association must be attested separately. Send the scan the embassy requests and ask it to confirm the count before paying.
